Left Handed, Righteous, and Ready: The 700 Warriors Who Changed History
In the world of the ancient Near East, being left-handed was rarely seen as a gift. It was often considered a defect, a weakness, or even "sinister". In a world built for the right-handed majority, a left-handed person was thought to be "bound" or "crippled" in their strong hand.
Yet, the Book of Judges gives us a stunning, counter-cultural scene: 700 elite soldiers from the tribe of Benjamin who were all left-handed.
Even more impressive? The Bible notes that these "handicapped" men were so skilled that they could sling a stone at a hair’s breadth and not miss.
The Background: A "Defect" Becomes a Strategic Weapon
In Judges, we see the tribe of Benjamin producing a specialized unit of fighters. While right-handed soldiers were the norm, left-handed warriors provided a surprising tactical advantage—they caught opponents off guard simply because their movements were reversed.
This theme reaches its climax with Ehud, a left-handed judge sent by God to deliver Israel from 18 years of Moabite oppression. Because he was left-handed, Ehud was able to hide a double-edged dagger on his right thigh, a spot guards did not check because they expected weapons on the left (the traditional side for a right-handed swordsman).
How God Used These "Unlikely" Warriors
God has a history of using the things the world rejects to accomplish His purpose.
- Surprising Power: While the world looked down on left-handedness, God used these warriors for tactical superiority. The 700 Benjamite slingers were "sharpshooters" that brought unmatched accuracy to the battlefield.
- Delivering the Oppressed: Through the left-handed assassin Ehud, God freed Israel from King Eglon’s oppression, bringing 80 years of peace to the land.
- Turning Weakness into Victory: The very thing that made these men seem "undesirable" or weak allowed them to execute a surprise attack that changed the course of history.
A Lesson for Today
The story of the 700 left-handed warriors isn't just about ancient warfare—it's a reminder that God can use our unexpected traits, our supposed "limitations," and our differences to do extraordinary things.
As the text shows, what man made fun of, God made use of. When we feel out of place, weak, or "left-handed" in a "right-handed" world, God can still use us for His perfect plan.
